Amazon has removed clothing from its website which referred to vice president nominee Kamala Harris in a derogatory term.

One of the sellers, The Oxygen Bandit, was offering t-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts with a similar design to Joe Biden's campaign logo which said "Joe and the h*e", according to USA Today.

The derogatory term used on the clothing products, which ranged in price from $24.99 to $42.99, is slang for the word "whore".

An Amazon spokeswoman confirmed to the New York Times that the products had been removed.

"All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account," she said. "These products have been removed."

Ms Harris made history on Wednesday as she became the first black and Asian-American woman to be officially nominated to a major party's presidential ticket.

Joe Biden, 77, named Ms Harris, 55, as his running mate last week to face incumbents Donald Trump, 74, and Vice President Mike Pence, 61.

During her acceptance speech Ms Harris condemned Donald Trump's "failure of leadership", adding that it had cost lives and livelihoods during the pandemic.

"We are a nation that is grieving - grieving the loss of life, the loss of jobs, a loss of certainty," she said.

Ms Harris gained prominence in the Senate for her interrogations of Donald Trump nominees, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Attorney General Bill Barr.

She is the first black woman and first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party, and only the fourth woman to be chosen on a presidential ticket.
