At least 36 people have been killed and hundreds more injured after separate tropical storms swept through parts of Bangladesh.

Most of the casualties were in the northern district of Bogra where homes were flattened by the storms, according to reports.

At least 20 people died in the district, while five people died in Dhaka, according to reports in the Bengali-language Prothom Alo newspaper.

Further casualties were recorded in other northern areas as well as in the south-west of the country.

The storms uprooted trees and damaged electricity distribution lines, as well as destroying hundreds of homes, shops and schools in parts of the South Asian nation.

Bangladesh often experiences such storms and tornadoes in April as the summer approaches.

Officials fear the storms could spread further across the country, the Associated Press reported.
