Billionaire inventor Sir James Dyson has snapped up Singapore’s biggest and most expensive apartment in a £44 million raid on the city’s property market.

The British tycoon behind the bagless vacuum cleaner bought the three-storey “super penthouse” at the top of Singapore’s tallest skyscraper last month, according to property records in the city.

The move is the latest sign of the Brexit-supporting entrepreneur’s growing commitment to the south-east Asian island city state since unveiling plans to relocate his business empire’s head office there from Britain in January. He also plans to build an electric car in Singapore.

The vast five-bedroom apartment, part of the Wallich Residence, is described as “taking luxury living to a new level”.

The Guoco Tower, where the flat is located

The flat, which has its own lift, occupies the 62nd to 64th floors of the 290-metre-high Guoco Tower, which was completed in 2016.

The 62nd floor has five ensuite bedrooms, a family room with an attached kitchen “to whip up simple meals” and a “private garden in the sky” with a viewing deck overlooking the city’s Marina Bay Sands and the financial district.

The middle storey, the “entertaining” level, has living room, dining room and full kitchen and a 600-bottle wine cellar.

On the top floor, the “party level”, is a terrace with a 12-metre pool, Jacuzzi room and Brazilian-style “cabana” barbecue, all of which allows guests to “relax in sheer comfort”.

Sir James will also have access to an “around-the-clock, seven-days-a-week” butler service, for whom “no request is too trivial”.

The apartment first went on the market in 2017, priced at S$100 million (£59 million), but was bought for S$73.8 million (£44 million) by Sir James, who has been given permanent residence status, and his wife Deirdre, according to local media reports. Title records show that the couple became tenants of the 99-year leasehold property on June 20.

A spokesman for Sir James said: “Given the decision to locate the headquarters in Singapore and the growing focus of the company’s business in the region, of course James Dyson has bought a property there.”

Leong Boon Hoe of Sotheby’s International Realty, one of the agencies marketing the penthouse, said: “From the onset, the buyer was always going to be a foreigner. It’s a place to be able to showcase your wealth”.
