A British tourist has been arrested in Cyprus after a 46-year-old woman died in a hit and run accident, local police have said.

The victim, a Swedish tourist, is said to have been crossing the road when a rental buggy collided with her on Nissi Avenue in Ayia Napa about 6pm on Wednesday.

A local police spokesperson told the Cyprus Mail the suspect, 25, had been arrested on Wednesday night. Pictures published in the newspaper show the dark red beach buggy lying destroyed in the middle of the road.

The suspect failed to stop as the woman crossed a pedestrian crossing before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee the scene on foot, police said.

Police tracked down the suspect hours after the incident. Tests revealed traces of cannabis in his system and he was four times over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

He will appear in court later on Thursday.

The woman was rushed to Famagusta General Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
