A British woman has died in the French Alps in a skiing accident.

The family of Anne Clayton, 54, from Stockport, paid tribute to the mother-of-two who lost control, careered off the piste and hit a tree.

Her sons Andrew, 19, and Stephen, 22, were with their mother in the resort of La Plagne.

Mrs Clayton, who was widowed 12 years ago, was a volunteer for various charities.

Stephen, an estate agent in Manchester, said: “We were on holiday together when it happened. We have all skied all of our lives — she was a good skier. It was not a difficult run but because it rained last night it was quite icy.

"She lost control and dropped 20ft off the piste and made contact with a tree.”

The family arrived at the ski resort on Saturday and were enjoying their second full day on the slopes when the accident happened.

Mrs Clayton died at the scene.
