Brits in Beijing warned over heightened security threat

British tourists and ex-pats in Beijing have been told to be on alert by the Foreign Office following intelligence over a threat to foreigners.

Security has been tightened around a bar and shopping in the Sanlitun area popular with Westerners.

The American, British, French and other embassies urged their citizens to be vigilant.

Armed police were standing on guard in the area, which has many big-name brand stores and some embassies.

Beijing police announced they had issued a yellow security alert to ensure safety during the Christmas period.
