Bungling New York subway workers left commuters in a sticky situation when they painted a station platform bright yellow in the middle of rush hour.
The line marking the end of the platform was repainted as tens of thousands of people trekked to work on Wednesday morning.
Yellow footprints decorated trains and stations as rush hour commuters trampled in the fresh paint.
One bemused traveller questioned the error.
The self-proclaimed “transit enthusiast”, known as BoshJ on Twitter, wrote: “Someone just put down a fresh coat of yellow paint on the subway platform edge... at 9.30 on a Wednesday morning. This platform is going to be a mess of yellow footprints by the end of the day. What is going on?”
They continued: “It’s hard to think of a better metaphor for how colossally mismanaged the MTA, and the New York City subway in particular, is.”
Posting a photo of the inside of a subway train daubed with foot prints he wrote: “The results have been as expected.”
Others quickly responded with pictures of yellow foot prints on their train journeys.
Many people claimed they had witnessed similar maintenance work on the subway.
BoshJ replied to their concerns saying: “I genuinely want to know how something like this ends up happening. Surely someone, at some point, thinks “maybe rush hour isn’t the best time to be painting things”
New York City's non-emergency government services said they were “looking into the matter.”
