A black cat that disappeared from his home five years ago has been reunited with his owner after being found on the streets 1,200 miles away.

The cat, named Sasha, was discovered in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, after going missing from Portland in the US state of Oregon.

Viktor Usov, his owner, said he had reported his pet as missing five years ago and had since lost hope of finding his pet.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter scanned the Sasha’s microchip after he was found in the city and was able to contact Mr Usov.

Details of how the cat made it to Santa Fe were not immediately clear, but Mr Usov believes that his pet "hitched a ride" with someone.

Sasha was flown back to Portland this week.

Asked how he thought his cat had found his way to Santa Fe, Mr Usov said: "I guess I want to think he was on a great American adventure.”
