At least 39 people have been injured in a knife attack at a nursery in southern China, state media has reported.

The local government in the Guangxi region’s Cangwu county said 37 students and two adults were injured in the Thursday-morning attack at the school in Wangfu township, in the city of Wuzhou.

The head of the school, a security guard and a student are among those who were seriously injured in the attack, said state broadcaster CCTV.

Chinese state media has identified the alleged attacker as a security guard, with the surname Li.

The suspect has been detained by police. No motive was known and an investigation is under way.

The attack comes after a series of deadly attacks at schools in China over the past few years that prompted security upgrades.

Chinese law currently restricts the sale and possession of firearms.
