A dog in Croatia is the first in the country to be given a late night barking ban.

The three-year-old mutt, named Medo, must stay quiet over night after a neighbour complained his loud barking was making her ill.

His owner Anton Simunovic faces a 2,800 euro (£2,000) fine if he disturbs residents living nearby in the northern Croatian village of Peroj.

The court order means Medo will be locked in his barn between 8pm and 8am.

Despite the order, Mr Simunovic denied that his dog was being too loud.

He said: "He barks normally, like any dog does. He barks when he sees a cat, or if someone unknown comes to his territory."

The controversy around Medo's barking has triggered widespread interest in the region on social media.

More than 30,000 fans have joined a Facebook page supporting Medo since the case hit the headlines earlier this year.

Pet owners have posted hundreds of photos of their animals online in a gesture of solidarity.

A court in the town of Pula is still yet to make a final ruling, with the neighbour seeking 1,400 euro (£1,000) in damages. She declined to comment today.
