Desmond Tutu's house was burgled on the day he gave a speech at his friend Nelson Mandela's memorial service, police said.

The former Archbishop of Cape Town was targeted by thieves for the second time in three months.

The South African Police Service said the burglary happened between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesday, the same day the Nobel Prize winner appeared at Mr Mandela's memorial service in Soweto, Johannesburg.

"At this stage, we cannot give further details, as the investigation into the matter is still ongoing. No arrests have been made as yet," a spokesman said.

The 82-year-old Tutu also had his home robbed in August as he and his wife slept inside. Both were unhurt.

His personal aide, Roger Friedman said today: "I can confirm that there was a burglary last night."

Anti-apartheid icon Tutu, led prayers as world leaders gathered in a football stadium to pay their respects to Mr Mandela.
