Donald Trump has claimed his 2016 election campaign was “spied on” after the FBI released documents alluding to an investigation into former adviser Carter Page’s ties with Russia.

The FBI released a dossier on Saturday that suggested they had carried out an investigation into whether Mr Page had acted as a Russian agent.

However, Mr Page told CNN on Sunday he was never an agent of a foreign power, and that the documents overstated his ties to Russia.

Describing the allegations as “way over the top”, Mr Page said: “"I've never been an agent of a foreign power by any stretch of the imagination.

"You talk about misleading the courts, it's just so misleading. It's literally a complete joke."

In a tweet posted on Sunday evening the President said: “Looking more & more like the Trump Campaign for President was illegally being spied upon (surveillance) for the political gain of Crooked Hillary Clinton and the DNC (Democratic National Committee).

"Republicans must get tough now. An illegal Scam!"

He offered no evidence to support his claims.

The FBI released 412 pages of documents of heavily redacted material including surveillance applications, renewals, and warrants surrounding the investigation into Mr Page.

The information was made public following Freedom of Information requests from US Media Outlets.
