The mother of a woman killed in the Charlottesville violence said Donald Trump’s staff appeared to try and call her during her daughter’s funeral.

Susan Bro said she refuses to speak to the US President after he suggested there were “some very bad people” on both sides of the protests in Virginia.

Ms Bro’s daughter Heather Heyer, 32, died after a car ploughed through a crowd of anti-fascist protesters at a rally on Saturday.

In an interview with Good Morning America, she said the White House repeatedly tried to call her, and that the first time was during the funeral.

When asked if she had spoken to Trump, she said: “I have not, and now I will not. At first I just missed his calls. The first call it looked like actually came during the funeral.

“I didn’t even see that message. There were three more frantic messages from press secretaries throughout the day and I didn’t know why… I was home recovering from the exhaustion of the funeral.”

She added: “I’m not talking to the President now, I’m sorry, after what he said about my child.”

Trump was heavily criticised for suggesting there were some “very fine people on both sides” of the protests in Charlottesville.

In a heated news conference on Tuesday, Trump said there was "blame on both sides" for the violence, which culminated in the death of Ms Heyer.
