Emergency talks over Congo crisis

The leaders of Congo and neighbouring Rwanda held emergency talks in Uganda today after anti-government rebels seized Congo’s eastern provincial capital Goma and its airport.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni was mediating as Rwandan president Paul Kagame and Congolese president Joseph Kabila met in Kampala. The Congolese government has refused to negotiate with M23 rebels, who made their move last night. Rwanda and Uganda are accused of arming them.

The UN Security Council demanded the rebels disband, insisting Congolese government authority be restored.
