A black panther seen roaming around rooftops and entering an open window in a French town has been captured by emergency services.

People in Armentieres, near Lille, saw the young panther walking along a second-floor roof for nearly an hour.

The cat, which authorities said weighs about 20kg and is the size of a small Labrador, was pictured going in and out of an open window.

Animal rescuers set up a cordon and a vet then tranquillised the panther, which the Animal Protection League said is about five or six months old.

The organisation told La Voix du Norde newspaper that the panther was not aggressive and had been domesticated by its owner.

The newspaper reported the cat walked down the stairs of a family home, causing a 15-year-old girl to flee when she saw the animal on Wednesday.

But the girl's mother, Sylvie, insisted the panther was not aggressive.

While the owner is being sought by French authorities, the panther has been transferred to an unannounced destination.

La Voix du Nord reported police want to speak to the owner for endangering others and enquire where they got the animal from.

A police spokesman said only a zoo would be able to acquire a permit to keep such an animal.
