A football fan allegedly murdered his friend after he claimed Ronaldo was a better player than Messi.

The two men were celebrating a birthday at a flat in Mumbai when they got into a heated row over which of the two stars is better, according to reports in India.

Nwabu Chukwuma, 22, allegedly slit the throat of Obinna Michael Durumchukwa, 34, after the victim insisted Real Madrid forward Ronaldo was superior to his Barcelona rival.

Chukwuma reportedly used a shard of broken glass to attack Durumchukwa, who had thrown a beer bottle at him which missed and shattered against a wall.

Inspector Kiran Kabadi, of the Tulinj police, was quoted in the Mumbai Mirror saying: "A discussion over the best current footballer led to the incident."

Chukwuma was due to appear in court charged with murder on Monday.

Argentine Messi and Portugal star Ronaldo have been the only players to win the world player of the year award since 2008.
