A tourist plummeted to his death after apparently losing his footing as he tried to pose for a photograph at the ancient Peruvian ruins of Machu Piccu.

The body of German national Oliver Park, 51, was recovered from a ravine in the Andes on Thursday.

He reportedly ignored safety warnings and signs to access a restricted area close to the edge of a cliff on Wednesday.

The BBC reported the tourist lost his footing when he attempted to pose for a picture of himself leaping as if in flight.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to a nearby police station.

Police in Peru said it would then been taken to a morgue in the city of Cusco, according to the broadcaster.

The ancient site of Machu Picchu is one of the most popular tourist attractions in South America, with more than a million visitors each year.
