Germany is the best country in the world - at least according to research on how it is perceived by outsiders.

In a survey of 20,000 people from 20 different countries, it beat the US to top spot for the second time in the 10 year history of the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index.

The UK came in third place, but it was Germany who came out on top in the poll - which was conducted in July after the nation's World Cup triumph in Brazil.

Such was the boost from the heroics of Thomas Muller and his team-mates, Germany saw its rating for sporting excellence jump rise more than any other category measured in the index.

The study saw 23 attributes of each country measured and divided into six main categories: exports, governance, culture, people, tourism and immigration/investment.

Index founder Simon Anholt said: "Germany appears to have benefited not only from the sports prowess it displayed on the world stage at the FIFA World Cup, but also by solidifying its perceived leadership in Europe through a robust economy and steady political stewardship."

Russia and China saw their ratings fall thanks to tensions in their foreign affairs.

The Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index top 10:

1. Germany

2. United States

3. United Kingdom

4. France

5. Canada

6. Japan

7. Italy

8. Switzerland

9. Australia

10. Sweden
