Palestinian militants fired more than 60 rockets and mortar shells from the Gaza Strip into Israel today injuring three migrant workers in a sharp escalation of violence.

Israeli responded with airstrikes that killed a man in Gaza, while another man died of wounds sustained in an attack the night before.

Four Palestinians have now died in strikes on Gaza in the past two days.

The security forces of the territory’s rulers Hamas were ordered to evacuate their bases for fear they would be targeted and some schools in southern Israel and Gaza cancelled classes.

Crossings between Gaza and Israel were shut down.

Qatar’s leader Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani yesterday gave Hamas unprecedented political recognition by becoming the first head of state to visit Gaza since they seized power in 2007.

He also tried to revive flagging support for the regime by promising to invest £158 millions in construction projects.
