Joggers at a park in the US are being warned to watch out for an owl which steals hats after a spate of attacks on runners.

The warning was issued by local officials after four joggers were targeted within a month at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem, Oregon.

Conservation experts believe just one barred owl is responsible for the attacks.

Members of the Audubon Society have said the culprit could be acting particularly aggressively because of nesting season, according to reports.

One of the bird's victims, Brad Hilliard, 36, told Reuters: “It was kind of amazing how it just swooped down and grabbed my hat like that. It just pulled it right off my head like it was nothing!”

Signs have since been put up in the park warning people to avoid jogging before dawn or advising them to wear a hard hat for protection.

Barred owls are native to North America and are often found in suburban neighbourhoods.
