Fifteen stab wounds were found on the torso of a Swedish journalist who died after she went on a trip with a Danish inventor on his submarine, a prosecutor said.

Jakob Buch-Jepsen said the cause of death for 30-year-old Kim Wall has not yet been established.

He was speaking at a pre-trial hearing on Tuesday for inventor Peter Madsen, who says he is innocent of manslaughter.

Ms Wall was last seen alive on August 10 as she departed on a submarine trip with Madsen. She was researching a feature about his submarine.

The freelance journalist was later reported missing by her boyfriend and the submarine sank hours after the search for her began.

Madsen says Ms Wall died after being accidentally hit by a heavy hatch in the submarine's tower and he buried her at sea.

Ms Wall's headless torso was found off Copenhagen August 21, 10 days after his arrest. Police said the arms, legs and head had been deliberately cut off.

Tuesday's hearing at Copenhagen City Court was not aimed at determining the guilt of Madsen, but to extend his detention to October 31 while police investigate.
