A location scout for the hit Netflix series Narcos was shot dead in Mexico while searching for places to film the programme.

Carlos Muñoz Portal, 37, was found dead in his car, his body riddled with bullets, in Temascalapa, a violent region in central Mexico, according to local media.

Netflix has said it is aware of his death but that the circumstances “are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate what happened”.

The Narcos series is about the rise and fall of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Its fourth season is to focus on the Juárez drug cartel in Mexico.

Muñoz had worked on films such as Man on Fire, Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and the fourth film of the Fast and Furious franchise.

His death has raised fears that planned productions could now be moved from the country.

His car was found on an unnamed dirt road in the community of San Bartolo Actopan, in the north-east of Mexico state.

A spokesman for the attorney general of Mexico state said due to the remote location “we have no witnesses”.

In a statement, Netflix said: "We are aware of the passing of Carlos Muñoz Portal, a well-respected location scout, and send our condolences to his family.

"The facts surrounding his death are still unknown as authorities continue to investigate."
