A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of hero US airman Spencer Stone.

Sergeant Stone, 23, was one of three American men who tackled a gunman to the ground on board a train from Amsterdam to Paris in August.

He was with three women and another man outside a bar in Sacramento, California, last month when an argument broke out with another group.

During the altercation, Sergeant Stone was stabbed and suffered ‘multiple injuries’ to his chest, it was reported.

James Tran, 28, was charged with attempted murder and appeared in court on Friday, November 6, where he was told he is being held on a $2 million bond.

Wearing an orange Sacramento County jail jumpsuit, he spoke only to answer questions from Judge Ben Davidian and to speak with his attorney.

He did not enter a plea.

Mr Tran, who was arrested on Wednesday, November 4, will next appear in court on December 1.
