A man has died after being gored by a bull at a festival in eastern Spain.

Authorities said the Spanish man, who has not been named, was gored in his side by a bull called Cocinero at a bull running festival in the town of Pobla de Farnals in the Valencia region.

He was taken to hospital but died later, officials said on Sunday.

A second Spanish man was gored in the leg by the same bull and was in a stable condition in hospital, they added.

Both men were reportedly members of the group which organised the festival, according to local media.

Celebrations in the town were cancelled on Saturday night in the wake of the tragedy.

Footage has been posted by Spanish media which reportedly shows the bull involved.

Safety fears have previously been raised over bull running festivals, which take place in more than 1,820 municipalities in Spain every year.

Animal rights activists annually campaign against the festival, claiming it is cruel to animals.

Four runners were gored at the famous Pamplona bull run last year.

Sixteen people have died in bull runs since 1910, most recently in 2009.

The bulls that run each morning are killed in the afternoon by professional bullfighters.

Expert bull runners, mostly locals, try to sprint at full steam just in the front of the bull horns before peeling off at the last second. The inexperienced, a group that includes most foreigners, do well enough to scramble out of the way, often ending up in piles of fellow runners.
