Dozens of bags found containing human remains in Mexico

At least 45 bags with human remains have been found during a search for eight missing people in Mexico.

The grim discovery was made at the bottom of a 40-metre ravine on the outskirts of Guadalajara on Tuesday.

The state prosecutor’s office in Jalisco said the bags contain body parts from both men and women.

Authorities had launched a search operation after eight call centre workers - all aged in their 30s - were reported missing on Saturday, May 20.

It is not known whether the eight people are among the remains found.

The first bag was found on Tuesday but the investigation was halted because of the difficult terrain and lack of sunlight.

The search resumed on Wednesday and will continue until all remains are located, the prosecutor’s office said.

Such discoveries are not uncommon in Mexico, where more than 110,000 people remain missing.

More than 15,000 people have vanished in Jalisco alone – the highest number across all Mexican states.

Many people who go missing are victims of organised crime. Jalisco is currently gripped by a violent drug war between the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG) and their rival Nueva Plaza.
