Mumbai dogs react to river water, turning them bright blue

Chemicals released into a river in Mumbai are turning stray dogs bright blue.

Residents in the Indian capital of Mumbai were met with the bizarre sight of the blue dogs roaming the streets earlier this month.

The brightly-coloured mutts are believed to have suffered a reaction to waste dumped into the Kasadi River in the Navi district of the city.

The canines were spotted in the Taloja industrial area of Mumbai which suffers heavy pollution.

A factory making detergent is believed to be behind the chemical spill. They were accused of releasing dye into the water.

Animal rights workers believe the dogs turned blue after wading through the river to cool off or while searching for food.

They are now campaigning for the factory responsible to face punishment amid fears hundreds of other creatures may have been affected.

Mumbai is home to hundreds of food, pharmaceutical and engineering factories that line the banks of the river and have been discharging their untreated pollutants into the waterway.

The local Pollution Control Board says it's investigating and will take action against the polluters.
