New Yorkers have shared remarkable footage of subway stations submerged under water following heavy rain and flash flood warnings.
Commuting chaos hit more than a dozen lines as rain flooded into the city's transit system, creating waterfalls on station platforms and pools of water inside train cars.
New York’s troubled subway system fell victim to the severe flooding after the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the city on Monday.
Many commuters witnessed the subway flooding first hand and uploaded dramatic pictures and videos of water pouring from the ceiling during their morning commute onto Twitter.
Traveller Jeremy Barr shared a clip with the words: “Good morning and welcome to hell”.
The flooding seemed to be particularly bad in one subway station in Harlem, 145th Street and Broadway, where water cascaded down the stairs in a clip uploaded by passenger Josh Guild.
Transit officials claimed the issue was a street-level problem.
New York City transit tweeted: “As happens during heavy storms like today’s, water is entering some stations from the street. We’re sending emergency maintenance teams and customer service staff to locations where they’re needed.
“We’ll keep staircases and other station areas open as long as it’s safe to do so, but please be careful as you enter and exit trains."
They tweeted later on: “Thank you to our crews who are clearing a considerable amount of water that entered the system from the street this morning and are helping to keep New Yorkers moving.”
