Nintendo shares have spiked following the announcement of a launch date for its new iPhone Super Mario game.

Super Mario Run will be available for iPhone users in Apple’s App Store on December 15.

An Android version of the game is also planned.

Following the announcement, the company’s shares increased by five per cent as it looks to build on the hugely popular Pokemon Go app from earlier this year.

However, because the app was free to download analysts said it did not generate as much cash for Nintendo as it could have.

Smartphone games have become the gaming industry's fastest growing source of revenue but Nintendo has been criticised for failing to capitalise in the market.

The Japanese firm has promised to reveal details of more games by March next year.

Super Mario Bros, created as a sequel to Donkey Kong, is the most successful video game series of all time.

The games involve Mario, an Italian-American plumber, who has to collect coins while avoiding enemies throughout a series of levels.

iPhone users will be charged $10 (£8) for the full game when it is released.
