North Korea has cancelled a high-level meeting with South Korea in reaction to on-going military exercises, state media reports.

Talks between the two countries aimed at reducing tension had been set to take place at a village on the border.

However, the North’s KCNA news agency said military exercises between the US and the South were a “provocation”.

The agency also reported that Pyongyang was also questioning whether next month's summit between North Korea's Kim Jong Un and US president Donald Trump can take place as planned.

The two-week military exercise between the US and South Korea started on Friday and involved around 11 warplanes.

President Trump shocked the world in March when he announced plans to meet Mr Kim for talks.

“We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!" he tweeted.
