North Korea to send delegation to Winter Olympics after meeting the South for high-level talks

North Korea has agreed to send a delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea this February.

The delegation will include high-ranking officials, athletes and supporters, South Korean officials have said.

It comes as the rival Koreas met for their first high-level talks in more than two years in the “peace village” of Panmunjom, located in the demilitarized zone at the border.

Seoul's vice unification minister Chun Hae-Sung said afterwards: "The North side proposed dispatching a high-level delegation, National Olympic Committee delegation, athletes, supporters, art performers, observers, a taekwondo demonstration team and journalists."

He said that South Korea proposed athletes from the two Koreas march together at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang games.

Seoul also proposed inter-Korean military talks to reduce tensions and a reunion of family members in time for February's New Year holiday.

Relations between the rival Koreas have become increasingly tense in recent months due to nuclear tests and rocket launches in the North.

The South has also been carrying out military displays with the US, which have been suspended for now.
