Debris has been scattered across a residential area in Colorado after a Boeing 777 plane experienced an engine failure following take-off.

The incident took place shortly after 1pm local time (8pm GMT) on Saturday.

Passengers on board the plane described hearing a “large explosion” shortly after take-off as the aircraft lost part of its engine.

However, the plane carrying 231 passengers and 10 crew on board, was able to land safely at Denver airport with no injuries reported.

Police in the town of Broomfield posted photos on Twitter, including an image of what seems to be the front of an engine casing in the garden of a home.

The Broomfield Police Department also shared photos of debris scattered across a turf field and advised people to avoid the area.

Broomfield Police urged residents not to touch or move the debris.

One of the passengers onboard told AP news agency that the pilot was giving an announcement when the explosion was heard.

“The plane started shaking violently, and we lost altitude and we started going down,” David Delucia said.

He added that he and his wife placed their wallets in their pockets so that “in case we did go down, we could be ID’d”.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the United Airlines plane was bound for Honolulu and suffered a failure in its right-hand engine.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board said they will be carrying out an investigation.
