Police in France were today hunting for two men who shot a police officer with his own gun in a government security building outside Paris.

The officer is reported to have surprised the duo during his rounds of the Interior Ministry complex this morning when one of them grabbed his gun and shot him.

A police spokesman said the victim had been taken to hospital but he was not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

Special security forces were today searching the building in the suburb of Pantin for the two suspects, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told a local radio station.

It remained unclear why the pair were in the complex, which includes a police vehicle garage, when the incident happened, investigators said.

There is also a police practice shooting stand on the premises, with a small gun room.

The Defence Ministry announced last month plans to reinforce security at its military facilities after a theft of explosives.

French authorities remain tense since Islamic extremist attacks in January left 20 people dead, including the three attackers.
