The Pope has opened a free laundrette for homeless people to use and help “restore their dignity” in Rome.

Pope Francis opened the facility, run by the Community of Sant’Egidio, on Monday in the city’s Trastevere area.

The Vatican said it would “restore dignity to many people who are our brothers and sisters”.

Alongside six washing machines, it also provides free washing powder, irons and tumble dryers.

Hairdressers, medical treatment and showers will also be added eventually.

Chief almsgiver, Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, said: “This is a free service offered to the poorest people, in particular to the homeless who can wash, dry and iron their own clothes and blankets.”

Back in 2014, the Pope marked his 78th birthday by distributing 400 sleeping bags to the city’s destitute.

Two years ago, he opened showers for rough sleepers near St Peter’s Basilica, where they were also offered free haircuts and meals.
