Comedian Ricky Gervais has gone on a spectacular Twitter rant over US President-elect Donald Trump.

The David Brent: Life on the Road star was clearly unhappy with the shocking result of Tuesday’s election, appearing to describe Mr Trump as an “angry, miserable, xenophobic, racist misogynist”.

Following the result, he wrote: “I feel bad for the poor schmucks celebrating too - Like turkeys wishing the farmer Happy Thanksgiving."

In response to many Twitter users accusing him of whining, he said: "Who's whining? Doesn't affect me son - I live in England The country always gets the leader it votes for- democracy."

He later retweeted a post from the billionaire businessman in 2013 in which Mr Trump said: “Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest -and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault.”

Mr Gervais added: "I feel sorry for the poor people he conned."

This afternoon he said: "The good thing about angry miserable xenophobic racist misogynists is that they'll always be angry and miserable whatever happens.

In reference to Mr Trump's well-publicised inheritance, he said: "I had no money growing up, but I had free health care & education which allowed me to "make it"."

The Office star added: "My mum always used to tell me "ability is a poor man's wealth." This was basically her way of saying I couldn't have any money."

"In the long run things won't change much. The rich will stay rich, and the people with power will make the poor blame each other."

He then appeared to go into meltdown, accusing some of his 11.6 million folllowers of taking every Tweet "personally".

He wrote: "If you take this tweet personally you are a dopey c***. I'm not tweeting you. Please unfollow if you don't understand."
