Russia has slapped an “adult-only” restriction on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast movie after protests over a gay character.

The culture ministry told The Associated Press that it has granted a screening license to the film, starring Emma Watson, with a 16+ age restriction.

The decision comes several days after Vitaly Milonov, a politician known for his extreme right views, petitioned the ministry to ban it. In a letter released by the RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday, Mr Milonov protested against the screening of a movie that disseminates “overt and shameless propaganda of sin and sexual perversion under the guise of a fairy tale.”

The family movie will be given the restricted certificate to prevent children from watching because of the studio’s first “exclusively gay moment” involving a character played by Josh Gad.

The film will be released later this month.
