An alleged serial killer dubbed China's 'Jack the Ripper' has been caught by police.

Married father-of-two Gao Chengyong is accused of raping and murdering 11 female victims aged as young as eight over a 14-year period.

China's Ministry of Public Security said he admitted to the killings in the north of the country between 1988 and 2002.

The 52-year-old is believed to have targeted young women dressed in red, following them home before raping and killing them.

It is alleged that he cut their throats and mutilated their bodies in the brutal murders.

Police said in 2004 they were looking for a suspect with a "sexual perversion" who "hates women".

"He's reclusive and unsociable, but patient," they added.

Gao was arrested at a grocery store he runs with his wife after police offered a £23,000 reward and re-examined DNA using new technology.

His arrest came after a DNA test when his uncle was arrested for a minor crime, China Daily reported. The DNA sample showed the alleged killings must have been committed by a relative.

The man's first alleged killing took place in May 1988 - the year his first son was born - when a 23-year-old woman was found in the city of Baiyin. She had been stabbed 23 times.

Chinese media said Gao also cut off parts of his victims' reproductive organs.
