Police in New York have launched a probe after jewellery worth more than £280,000 was stolen from two flats in Trump Tower.

Detectives believe the jewellery, encrusted with diamonds, emeralds and sapphires, was stolen from inside the building where US president Donald Trump still owns a penthouse.

The New York Post reported one victim, a 67-year-old woman who lives on the 42nd floor, reported five items missing worth a total £188,000.

These included earrings, two necklaces, a ring and a Harry Winston diamond bracelet.

The other theft reportedly involved a £93,000 Graff diamond bracelet, which was taken from a 59th-floor flat sometime between September 4 and 9.

A police spokesman said detectives had not yet identified a suspect, but were investigating everyone with access to the building, according to the New York Times.

There were no signs of forced entry at either apartment, the spokesman added.

Jonathan Wackrow, a former Secret Service agent, told CNN the incident was likely a source of "embarrassment factor" to agents.

He said the thefts raised concerns about insider threats at Trump Tower, which is a Secret Service-protected property.
