Police in Munich evacuated two stations amid fears of a New Year's Eve terror attack.

Authorities were acting on a tip-off that Islamist suicide bombers could target either the city's central station or Pasing station, Bavaria's interior minister said.

Police said in a tweet that people should avoid crowds and train stations, issuing an alert just hours before midnight.

Between five and seven militants from Islamic State were thought to be planning the attack.

Both train stations in the city have since reopened.

Bavarian Interior minister Joachim Herrmann said: "I am happy that nothing has so far happened and I hope it stays that way."

The alert came after several cities cancelled New Year's Eve celebrations amid terror fears.

Authorities in Brussels cancelled all official celebrations, and in Moscow, Red Square, a popular spot to ring in the new year, was closed.

In London 3,000 extra officers were deployed to the inner city, including armed police.
