A two-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a hot van outside a nursery in Miami.

According to investigators, the toddler was spotted by another driver after the van driver had left the vehicle to drop other children off at the nursery.

Emergency services arrived around 3.45pm at Vision Life Academy and found the boy unconscious and in cardiac arrest.

He was rushed the Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Centre but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Officers said the boy had been found in the rear compartment of the van but they did not know how long he had been in there and if he had been properly restrained.

Miami Fire Rescue captain Ignatius Carroll told NBC Miami: “When you see someone so young and helpless, and fragile that isn't able to tell you what's happening, what's going on, then that's when you start fearing the worst and a whole lot of things go through your mind.”

Detectives confirmed several people, including the van’s driver, were being questioned.

The identity of the child has not been released.
