US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to visit North Korea for talks on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The White House announced on Monday that Mr Pompeo's meeting aims "to continue the ongoing and important work of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula."

The Secretary will be leaving for North Korea on July 5 to meet with the North Korean leader and his team, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters at a briefing.

Mr Pompeo will also visit Tokyo, Hanoi, Abu-Dhami and Brussels over the 7 day trip which will finish on July 12.

During his visit he will meet with Japanese and South Korean officials, the US state department said.

His visit follows on from President Trump's historic meeting with Kim Jong-un in Singapore last month.

Trump and Kim held nearly five hours of talks at the unprecedented summit as the US president gambled on the agreement to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons.

Brushing aside warnings that Kim may ultimately fail to ditch the pariah state’s nuclear arsenal, Mr Trump said: “Our eyes are wide open but peace is always worth the effort.”

The US president announced that US-led military exercise, or “war games”, to counter the North Korean threat would be called off as diplomacy is ramped up, though economic sanctions would remain for the time being.

“We’re prepared to start a new history, and we’re ready to write a new chapter between our two nations,” said the US president.

“We dream of a future where all Koreans can live together in harmony...where the light of peace chases away the darkness of war.”
