At least one person is dead and two are missing after a hot air balloon hit a power line and set alight during a festival in Virginia, America.

Police said they have recovered the body of one person and are continuing to search for the others still missing after the accident, which took place on Friday evening.

The balloon was carrying a pilot and two passengers as part of the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival, officials confirmed.

It crash landed near a park as the festival was hosting a special Friday Flights Happy Hour offer.

Shocked witnesses posted photos online showing a balloon in mid-air with its basket engulfed in flames and a trail of smoke spilling into the sky

Others said they heard people screaming for help while the basked was consumed by flames.

Carrie Hager-Bradley told NBC: “They were just screaming for anybody to help them.”

Witnesses said there was an explosion as it hit the line and the balloon then separated from the basket carrying the passengers.

The dead person has not yet been identified.

More than 20 hot air balloon teams from across the United States were to take part at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The Saturday and Sunday events have been cancelled.
