This is the hair-raising moment an 85-year-old pilot narrowly escaped disaster during an aborted landing attempt - before flying 100 miles with damaged propellers.

The small plane skids along the runway on its belly as pilot Chris Georgaklis touches down with the wheels raised.

Mr Georgaklis said the landing gear was raised because he had realised moments before hitting the tarmac that he was travelling too fast and needed to pull back up.

The octogenarian's risky manoeuvre left the plane with mangled propellers, yet he still managed to fly a further 100 miles after the failed landing.

The witness who shot the video told local news station WPBF: "I was totally amazed that he was able to get off the ground, and I was totally amazed that he was able to fly anywhere at any distance.

"The propellers are all messed up ... not even sounding like they're supposed to sound."

Mr Georgaklis, from the US state of Florida, had been flying with his dog Buddy to visit friends near the small airstrip in Fort Pierce when the incident happened on April 11.

He decided to pull up and fly the 100 miles home to Fort Lauderdale after realising he was approaching the runway too quickly.

Mr Georgaklis, who has 50 years flying experience, told WPBF: "The gear was down, and I saw that I was going a little faster than I liked, because you have to stop quickly.

"I thought about it, and I said, 'Forget it. Let's go back home.'"
