West Point accident: Cadet killed and 22 people hurt after vehicle flips near US Military Academy training site

A US military cadet has died and 22 other people have been injured after a deadly accident in New York.

The incident happened near the West Point academy at 6.45am local time.

Images showed a large vehicle completely overturned following the incident.

Those hurt include 20 cadets and two soldiers.

A statement from the academy said: "One cadet is reported deceased, 20 cadets and two soldiers are wounded that were involved in a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. off Route 293."

The wounded have been taken to hospital and the incident is under investigation by authorities.

US President Donald Trump called it a "terrible accident".

He tweeted: "So sorry to hear about the terrible accident involving our GREAT West Point Cadets. We mourn the loss of life and pray for the injured. God Bless them ALL!"

Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, said in a statement: "My heart breaks for all those involved in the tragic training accident at West Point this morning.

"These courageous cadets and soldiers represent the best of New York State and our country, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their bravery in choosing to serve our country and protect our freedoms."

He said the incident was "all the more heart wrenching" as people were commemorating the anniversary of D-Day.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, we pray for a speedy recovery for those involved and we share in the sorrow experienced by their loved ones during this extremely difficult time."

The West Point academy was established in 1802.

It has around 4,000 cadets training at its facilities.
