Westgate shooting: At least three injured as gunman opens fire in Arizona shopping district

Incident at the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale leaves one person in critical condition

At least three people have been injured in a shooting at an entertainment district in the US state of Arizona.

Police placed the area on lockdown as the shocking incident unfolded in the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale shortly before 7:30pm on Wednesday evening.

A suspect has been arrested and taken into custody, local police confirmed.

One of those injured is currently in a critical condition, Glendale police officer Tiffany Ngalula said.

The two others were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries, she added. The suspect was reportedly unharmed.

Police believe the man was the only one involved in the shooting, Ngalula said. His identity has not been revealed.

Ngalula added that officers were aware of reports there may be video footage of the shooting and asked anyone with access to such material to turn it over to police.

"Any information would be part of the evidence at this time," she said.

Senator Martín Quezada, who represents the residents of Glendale, was among those to witness the gun attack.

He wrote on Twitter: “I saw 2 victims with my own eyes. Not sure how many others.

“I saw the shooter. Being told not to say anything else about details 'til I speak to police. I'm ok. Lots of shaken up people.”

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey meanwhile said he was monitoring the situation and that “the state stands ready to support".
