A woman has died after a 12-year-old boy jumped 30-feet from a bridge and landed on her car - but the youngster survived.

Marisa Harris, 22, was driving under the overpass in Virginia when the boy landed on her vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene but, according to NBC Washington, the boy – who has not been named – survived the drop.

He was rushed to hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries after the incident in Fairfax County on Saturday afternoon, local media reported.

The passenger in the front of Ms Harris’ car, reported to be her boyfriend, stopped car in the aftermath of the crash. He was not injured, police said.

Ms Harris, from Maryland, was a graduate student at Marymount University in Virginia, her mother told NBC.

Police said they are investigating the incident as an attempted suicide.
