Cardinal Pell to walk free after sex assault convictions quashed

Cardinal George Pell is to walk free from jail after Australia’s highest court overturned his conviction for sexually assaulting two teenage choirboys in the 1990s.

In a unanimous ruling this morning, the High Court found that the jury in Pell's trial "ought to have entertained a doubt" as to his guilt.

The 78-year-old former Vatican treasurer cannot be retried on the charges.

The decision has brought an end to the most high profile case globally of alleged sexual abuse by priests to have rocked the Roman Catholic Church.
