A police officer is awaiting surgery after suffering serious pelvic, leg and shoulder injuries when he was knocked down by a car.

The officer, 44, remains in a stable condition at an unnamed hospital after being struck while attempting to apprehend a suspected burglar in Erdington, Birmingham, on Friday.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said a 50-year-old man arrested nearby on suspicion of attempted murder remains in custody.

The suspect was detained in the Aston area of Birmingham just after 7pm following a short chase by police on foot.

Officers were originally called to Compton Road in Erdington at around 3pm following a report that a shed had been broken into.

After an extensive search of the area, a man matching the description of the suspect was spotted in a blue Honda estate on Oval Road.

The injured officer, who is based in Sutton Coldfield, was then hit by the Honda, suffering a suspected fractured pelvis.
