A drink-driver was caught speeding at around 100mph just four minutes into 2014, traffic police have said.

Omer Karzan was arrested in Birmingham at 12.04am on New Year's Day after being pulled over by members of the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG).

Officers said the car valeter's Jaguar was initially spotted speeding on the A38(M), which links the M6 to Birmingham city centre.

In a message posted on its official Twitter feed, the CMPG said: "Have arrested our first drink-driver of 2014 at four minutes past midnight. Driving at 100mph along Aston Expressway."

Karzan, who was born in Iran, pleaded guilty yesterday to separate charges of drink-driving and driving without due care and attention.

The 32-year-old, of Ash Street, Burton, Staffordshire, was granted bail and is due to be sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates' Court next week.

The A38(M) has no central reservation and is subject to a variable speed limit, usually set at 50mph.
