Newsnight report: BBC statement due

The BBC is preparing to make a statement in the wake of the Newsnight child abuse broadcast.

A spokesman for the corporation said that a statement would be released "shortly".

Earlier director general George Entwistle said the report, which falsely implicated the former senior Tory Lord McAlpine, should never have been broadcast.

During an interview with the Radio 4 Today programme he disclosed that he had not known in advance that the report, shown on November 2, was going out.

His disclosure led some MPs to question whether he was the right person to lead the BBC.

The Newsnight report dramatically unravelled on Friday night when child abuse victim Steve Messham said Lord McAlpine was not the man who had abused him when he was a teenager at a North Wales children's home in the 1970s and 1980s.
