A postman has died after being knocked down by his own van.

The incident happened in Ford Terrace on Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides.

It is understood he was caught under the vehicle as he removed parcels from the back.

Emergency services were called but the man died at the scene, Northern Constabulary said.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the man, who has not been named while his family is informed, was working at the time.

She said: "Unfortunately one of our postmen on Benbecula died while delivering the mail.

"We are assisting the police in their investigation. Our thoughts are with the postman's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

The Road Policing Unit from Dingwall is investigating the circumstances.
